My close friends have always known that I am interested in working under Risk Management ("RM")within PwC. But what exactly is RM? Initially, I didn't know about the various aspects involved under Risk Management, as it is truly a wide topic. Many things relate to some form of RM, e.g. whether we should accept a new client or whether we should continue with the existing client relationship, what we need to do to limit our risk exposure, regarding types of work performed (through wording the engagement letter, release letter, etc). Our RM policies forms some form of determinant when making some of the Management Group's business decisions. It is closely related to the things that I am currently doing for the Management Group and in order to get an all-round picture, getting involved in both aspects is beneficial for my personal development.
However, somehow, some other business decisions are coming into play, where it should be more beneficial for me to report directly under ONE boss. Currently, both of my bosses are too busy with their various roles, they are not able to spend sufficient time in supervising me and monitor my personal development. In other words, if I don't bother about it myself, I would have been left out again! I know from the last few months that if I focus more on RM, I will be receiving more attention from the RM manager, as she's more focussed on RM only. In addition, our RM Partner has a more personal touch to staff and is more willing to spend time with staff development. Frankly speaking, I have been interested in RM for quite a while and given the opportunity, I am very happy to spend more time under RM. However, I am not sure what sort of agenda the "people from the top" has planned for and I don't want to be used as a chess on their chessboard...
Anyways, at the minimum, I know that if RM manager were to supervise me directly, she'll expose me for other opportunities, e.g. negotiation with other Big 4 firms. gradual involvment in firmwide RM. Sounds more interesting and can generate a higher profile.
YES, definitely, I am someone who wants to make a difference to how things work and be known. But I'm not sure whether I am still up for this type of "publicity" after sitting at the backseat for so long...well, let's see how things go for the next FY2006/07...
